I really prefer the impressionists, and particularly their impressions of beautiful southern France. Just one of my favourites is the Dutchman Van Gogh's "Irises".

An interesting local Ottawa artist, John Mlacak, has recently branched out to large oils, and one in particular appeals to me, of Honfleur in northern France. If it appeals to you too, you might want to check out his website.

Another local artist, regularly exhibiting at restaurants such as Kamal's on Bank Street, is Frank Potvin. Below is his rendition of "Irises" based on the permanent iris beds at Ottawa's Experimental Farm Flower Gardens, but reminiscent of other "Irises."

To continue the Van Gogh theme, please go to our ceramic tile page to see what can be done in that medium.

While we are in an artistic mood, have a look at this small piece of humour that I clipped out of the New Yorker about 20 years ago. This is "published" without Mr. Stevenson's permission, but I mean him no harm, only honour. (When is copyright protection over?)

Finally, I am also very slowly working on a motion detection activated, motor powered, articulated Amazon snapping crocodile jawbone set, complete with teeth and flashing coloured lights. Truly a work of mobile art. Photographs when I make some progress.

April, 2002.
